Running boards

How to create and run boards. Boards are added as menus in the site menu editor, and detailed settings after creation are made with the Settings button at the bottom of the board screen (visible only to users with manage permission) or in the admin.

Basic settings

  • Board name and description: shown at the top of the list.
  • Skin: you can choose PC and mobile skins separately. With a responsive skin, one is enough.
  • List columns: choose which columns (number, title, author, date, views, votes, etc.) appear in the list table. Extra variables can also be added as columns.
  • Posts per page, new-post indicator duration, and the like are also set here.

Categories

When you create categories in category management, category tabs appear at the top of the list, and writers choose a category when posting. Hierarchies (subcategories) are also supported.

Permissions

Each board can grant permissions per action.

PermissionMeaning
ListCan view the post list
ReadCan view post content
Write posts / Write commentsWhether writing is allowed
ManageManager of this board (manages posts, accesses settings)

For each permission, choose from everyone including guests, logged-in members, or specific member groups. For example, a notice board might allow everyone to read but only admins to write, while a members-only board restricts even the list to members.

Managing posts

  • Notices: designating a post as a notice when writing (with manage permission) pins it to the top of the list. You can also choose a site-wide notice.
  • Secret posts: if allowed in board settings, users can write posts visible only to the author and admins.
  • Post management: select posts in the list to move, copy, delete, or send them to the trash in bulk.
  • Deleted posts remain in the trash and can be restored.

Extra variables

To add input fields beyond title and body (contact info, region, link, etc.) to posts, declare extra variables. You can set the input type (single-line text, multi-line, choices, date, etc.) and whether it's required, and use them as list columns and search targets.

Comments

  • Set whether comments and secret comments are allowed in board settings.
  • Comments can also be turned off per post (writing option).
  • Replies to comments are shown indented.

Notifications and subscriptions

  • Post authors can get notified when someone comments on their post (writing option).
  • The notification center collects on-site notifications in one place.

Fighting spam

  • Set banned words, IP blocking, and rapid-posting limits in Admin > Spam filter.
  • We recommend applying CAPTCHA to boards that allow guest posting.

Frequently asked questions

  • Post numbers aren't consecutive: post numbers don't reuse the numbers of deleted posts. This is normal.
  • Attachments won't upload: check the files/ permissions, PHP upload_max_filesize, and the board's attachment size limit, in that order.
  • A post doesn't show in the list: check whether a category filter is applied, or whether the post is still a draft.
