Your first 30 minutes
This guide walks you through, in order, what you need to give your site its basic shape right after installation. Thirty minutes is enough.
1. Tour the admin screen
Go to your-site/admin. The top navigation gives you access to every admin feature.
- Admin home: See traffic, member stats, and recent posts at a glance.
- In Admin screen settings, you can change where the admin menu sits (top, left, or right) and set your own admin logo.
- While browsing your site, click the admin bar in the bottom-left corner to jump straight into the settings for the screen you are viewing.
2. Basic site information
Under System settings > Basic settings:
- Site title and slogan
- Default language and time zone
- Favicon and mobile icon
3. Create menus and boards
Site menu editor is the center of your site structure. Each menu item is connected to an actual screen, such as a board or a page.
- Go to the site menu editor.
- Click "Add menu" and choose a type:
- Board: A regular board with posts, comments, and attachments
- Content page: An information page you write directly in the editor
- Widget page: A page built by placing widgets (good for the main page)
- Shortcut: A link to another address
- Set a name and address (mid). The address becomes
your-site/mid. - Drag to reorder, and drag items under others to create second-level menus. You can also drag to reorder the top-level menus (sitemap).
- In Site design settings, set the default layout and the default skin for each module.
- If you installed a theme, applying it once switches the layout and skins together as a set.
- In the layout's detailed settings, adjust the logo image, accent color, menu connections, and more. If the layout supports it, you also add and reorder main slider slides here.
- The Responsive badge on the skin and layout selection screens means the design handles narrow screens too.
- The default editor is zittEditor. Try dragging and dropping an image to attach it.
- If attaching fails, it is a permission problem with the
files/folder. Check the permissions section in Installation. - Whether to allow sign-up, and which fields to collect at sign-up
- Member group setup (default, premium members, and so on)
- If needed, turn on social login and mobile identity verification. Both are off by default.
- Open your site while logged out (in a private window) to see it as a visitor would.
- Open it on a phone to check how it displays on a narrow screen.
- In system settings, review robots.txt and SEO settings to decide how your site appears in search engines.
In a menu item's Permissions, you can restrict list, read, and write access by member group.
